Welcome to the FEI Sports Forum 2017 platform. As you will see, we have a very busy and information packed schedule with Day 1 sessions focusing on all things Jumping and Day 2 looking at a myriad of topics including the FEI Officials Working Group, risk factors and bone injuries in Endurance, Eventing risk assessment and findings from the Dressage Judges Working Group.
Since being launched in 2012, the FEI Sports Forum has become an essential tool in our decision making process and an important platform for dialogue and consultation with the community. We are fortunate to have a sport that is growing, but we are also part of the very competitive sporting industry so we must ensure that we have solid foundations to sustain this growth as well as remaining attractive and appealing to our fans, the media, prospective sponsors, athletes, organisers and other stakeholder groups.
During Day 1, we will be discussing the future of Jumping with regards to the FEI Nations Cup™ series; the invitation system and the CSI/CSIO requirements and the way the latter will be integrated in the new system; opportunities for youth; and, a session on dress code at Jumping events in order to explore trends and new opportunities in the way we present our athletes and sport. These are all conversations we, as a community, need to have as they are part of the foundations and promotion of Jumping.

Day 2 is very much dedicated to education, information dissemination and the presentation of findings from various experts, stakeholder and FEI Working Groups. Equestrian sport is all about team work with many different roles and responsibilities and in order to ensure that all the different parties are able to achieve the goals set we need to take a look at the various processes and make improvements when and where necessary.
Our Officials play a vital role in the safeguard of integrity at events and it is our duty to protect them and provide the right tools and procedures so that they can fulfil their remits. The same is applicable to Judges in Dressage and this is why we set up these respective Working Groups - in order to identify the weaknesses in the system and propose solutions. Our duty to the safety and welfare of the horse and our athletes is paramount in everything we do, and education is key to ensuring that. The sessions on risk factors and bone injuries in Endurance and Eventing risk assessment reflect this duty we have to our athletes. Some formidable speakers and experts will be presenting these topics which I am sure will be extremely insightful and useful for any future decisions in the field of safety and welfare.
Information relating to the sessions as well as supporting documents for the FEI Sports Forum are provided here on this platform along with deadlines, congress fees and any other relevant information related to your visit to Lausanne.
For those unable to attend, we are also delighted to announce that all the sessions will be streamed live on inside.fei.org and the FEI YouTube channel. While watching, viewers will also have the opportunity to ask questions via the comments section on YouTube and relevance/time permitting, we will then direct these to the panel during the Q&A at the end of each session. We want these discussions to be as interactive and inclusive as possible so we encourage all those interested in the specific topics that are unable to attend to follow it live and ask their questions right then and there on the FEI YouTube channel.
We are looking forward to all the debates and feedback around the topics selected for this year’s Forum and would like to encourage everyone to contribute to the conversation and voice their opinions so that the Forum continues to serve the purpose it was created for. And last, but not least, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the speakers and experts from various fields who have accepted our invitation to be moderators, panellists, and rapporteurs during the FEI Sports Forum 2017.

The second day of the FEI Sports Forum 2017 will start with a lengthy session on FEI officials. The Working Group on FEI Officials, which was set up following the discussions at last year’s Sports Forum and is chaired by Mark Samuel (CAN), will present its findings. These range on a variety of topics, such as officials’ recruitment, job descriptions, age limit, remuneration, and education. A discussion with the Forum’s delegates will follow, where the participants’ feedback on the progress to date, personal experiences, expectations, and recommendations for the Group’s further work will be welcomed.

Mark Samuel, FEI Bureau Member; Chair, Working Group on FEI Officials – Moderator
The morning of the second day will conclude with a presentation on the initial findings of the Dressage Judges Working Group. The Group’s discussions, which have lasted for several months, were based on analytical studies of the current judging system and exploring judging systems used in other FEI disciplines, such as Reining and Vaulting.
During the Sports Forum session, Bettina de Rham, FEI Dressage Director and Frank Kemperman, Chair of the FEI Dressage Committee will focus on short-term and long-term solutions to address the issues encountered in Dressage judging, such as lack of transparency, consistency and clarity. The need to introduce a code of points and to concentrate further on education and training of judges across all levels are some of the long-term objectives proposed by the Working Group. The Sports Forum’s delegates feedback on the proposed measures and next steps will further inform the Group’s work.
The afternoon will begin with a session dedicated to Risk Management in Eventing.
The session will begin with a presentation of the risk management policy and programme implemented by the FEI to date, which will be followed by a discussion on the next steps, new proposals, and possible improvements. We encourage all the NFs to join in this important conversation to find out more about the FEI’s risk management initiatives and provide feedback and ideas.
