In 2022, FEI appointed the Equine Ethics and Wellbeing Commission (EEWBC), with the aim to make a review of the current status of FEI actions to ensure the welfare of FEI horses.
The Commission delivered the final report, in November 2023, which included 6 areas of priority and 30 recommendations on how FEI should take leadership and act. Based on the outcome of the report, The FEI Equine Welfare Strategy has been formulated with a clear vision to ensure a good life for FEI Horses complemented by our mission to be the guardians of horse welfare.
To address each area of focus and recommendations identified by the EEWBC, the FEI has developed an action plan on how to ensure good welfare for FEI Horses with the ambition to also inspire and support welfare initiatives for all horses globally.
The responsibility of being the guardians of horse welfare within equestrian sport is an important task and lies not only on the FEI - but on everyone engaged in the sport. For the horses and for the future of the sport, everyone must become a guardian and act when necessary, as emphasised in the video below narrated by Sabriina Ibáñez, FEI Secretary General. We are all guardians!
