Welcome to Jumping

Jumping is the best known – and probably most readily understood – of all the FEI disciplines and is one of the three Olympic equestrian sports, along with Dressage and Eventing. As in all equestrian disciplines, men and women compete on equal terms in Jumping in both individual and team events.

Jumping is a spectacular mix of courage, control and technical ability that takes horse and rider over 10 to 13 “knockable” obstacles, some of which may be double or treble combinations, with penalties incurred for each obstacle knocked down or refused. Jumping has also produced some of equestrian sport’s most memorable Olympic moments.

An example of this came in 1956 in Stockholm when Halla, still the only horse to have won three Olympic Jumping gold medals, threw her rider, Hans Günter Winkler, into the air after taking off for a fence too early. Winkler landed awkwardly back in the saddle, tearing a groin muscle in the process, but he knew that failure to continue in the competition would eliminate not only Halla and himself but the whole German team. He carried on valiantly despite being unable to give Halla direction, Halla completed the course without any faults, Germany won the team gold medal and Halla and Winkler the individual gold.

Winkler went on to become the only rider to win five Olympic Jumping gold medals, while household names associated with Jumping are Winkler’s fellow German multi-Olympic gold medallists Alwin Schöckemöhle and Ludger Beerbaum. Canada’s Ian Millar, meanwhile, equalled the record for the most Olympic appearances by any athlete in London in 2012, his tenth Olympic Games.

Update on confirmed EHV-1 cases in Oliva (ESP)

The FEI is working closely with the Spanish National Federation, the Spanish Veterinary Authority and the Organising Committee in Oliva following four confirmed cases of EHV-1 at Oliva (ESP). These four horses were among ten horses stabled in the same stable block that developed fever. They were immediately isolated and tested, with four returning a positive test for EHV-1. There have been no reports of any neurological signs in these horses.

All the precautionary measures to minimise the risk of transmission have been swiftly applied, and ALL the horses attending Oliva from 7 February to 22 February - close to 1,000 horses – are now blocked in the FEI database. This includes any horses that may have already left Oliva to compete at other FEI events.

For the 82 horses stabled in the same block as the four horses that tested positive, they are required to stay onsite for at least seven days with measures and testing protocols to be fulfilled prior to leaving the venue, while for the remaining horses, they can leave the venue as soon they have completed a pre-departure veterinary check.

The PRs have all been notified, alongside their respective National Federations.

All the horses that have been blocked in the FEI database are prevented from attending any FEI events until they have fulfilled certain health requirements which are imposed in order to minimize any potential transmission of the virus, both to their own horses and the wider horse population. The mandatory biosecurity measures include isolation for a minimum of 21 days, taking twice daily rectal temperatures and conducting laboratory testing for EHV-1. Release from isolation can only take place on the advice of a veterinarian and in order to be “un-blocked” and have access to FEI Events, the horses will need to comply with all the return to competition protocols and have the restriction lifted by the FEI Veterinary Department.

An FEI Update will be sent tomorrow to the greater equestrian community. We thank you for your cooperation and vigilance in all matters of biosecurity.

Should you have any questions regarding this matter, don’t hesitate to contact the Veterinary Department.

FEI Secretary General approves FEI Calendar 2023

We are pleased to inform you that the FEI Secretary General has approved the FEI Calendar for 2023 for all disciplines. It can be consulted online in the FEI Database.

In accordance with the FEI General Regulations, Article 112 Official Calendar, National Federations (NFs) had until 1 October 2022 at the latest to send in applications and modifications to CIs taking place in 2023 to the Secretary General. The Secretary General approves the official Calendar for the following year.

Approval of the 5* Jumping Calendar for 2024 is scheduled for late November/early December 2022 but could be postponed should the FEI General Assembly in Cape Town (RSA) approve FEI’s proposal to change the deadline for receipt of applications for 5* to 1 May (the year before the Event takes place).

In addition, the Secretary General has extended the measure taken on 28 February 2022 to remove all international equestrian events in Russia and Belarus from the FEI Calendar. As a consequence, no FEI events will be accepted/entered in either country in the FEI Calendar for 2023.

The other measures approved by the FEI Executive Board in February remain in place, as follows:

    • Cancellation or relocation of Officials’ course scheduled to be held in Russia and Belarus (if any);
    • Freezing all FEI Solidarity projects planned for/ongoing in Russia and Belarus; and
    • Cancellation of any other FEI activities scheduled to take place in Russia and Belarus.

Detailed information on the decision taken by the FEI Executive Board on 28 February is available here.

The Secretary General has also confirmed that the FEI Board’s Emergency Board Resolution of 2 March 2022 prohibiting all Russian and Belarusian Athletes, Horses and Officials from participating in FEI Events remains in place until further notice.

Should you have any questions, please send an email to calendar@fei.org.

FEI Jumping Guidelines for use of Tack, Saddlery and Dress

In view of frequent questions concerning FEI Jumping Tack, Saddlery and Dress, the attached Guidelines have been created to help stakeholders better understand the Rules. The Guidelines are published on Inside.FEI.org, on the FEI Jumping Rules page.

It is a document to be used by Athletes, Officials as well as other stakeholders, and will be updated as necessary with any clarifications needed. The Guidelines are based on a non-exhaustive list of questions asked about the use of Equipment and Dress at FEI Jumping competitions.

The Guidelines are to be read in conjunction with the FEI Jumping Rules, current version. In case of any discrepancies, the Jumping Rules will prevail.

In addition, all items that are allowed are only allowed under the condition that they are used correctly and do not have a negative impact on horse welfare.

Please share these Guidelines amongst the Jumping Officials and Athletes. The most current version of the Guidelines will always be published on the relevant Rules pages linked above and the FEI Rules App.

For any questions please contact the FEI Jumping department.

The “IJOC Award” presented to Willem Luiten (NED)

A special ceremony was held at the Dutch Masters in ‘s-Hertogenbosch to recognise Willem Luiten (NED), former President of the International Jumping Officials Club. Presented by, Stephan Ellenbruch (GER), Chairman of the FEI Jumping Committee, Glenn Maes (BEL), President of the International Jumping Officials Club (IJOC) and Laura van de Graaf (NED) IJOC Board Treasurer, the “IJOC Award” was given to Willem Luiten for his outstanding contribution to IJOC and equestrian sport more generally.

Willem Luiten has been involved in the sport of Jumping at many levels and for a long time, including but not limited to his management role in the Dutch National Federation, national and international judging, and breeding. He is also the proud father of Marten Luiten, the FEI Dressage European Young Riders Champion for two consecutive years.

Following his presidential election in IJOC in 2018, Willem focused on key areas for the development of the Club. The “President’s Blog” as he called it was his invention to develop communication with members. He further strengthened the position of the Club via the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the FEI, propelling the Club to a wider member network and increasing collaboration with the FEI to represent the interests of FEI Jumping Officials in the decision-making process.

Willem stepped down from his role in 2021 due to health reasons but is dedication and achievements will be long respected by all stakeholders in the world of equestrian sport.

In his statement, the current president of the IJOC, Glenn Maes, said: “It is with great respect that I can honour Willem for his career on behalf of the IJOC Board and the member officials of our club around the world. Years ago, Willem and I started our international judging careers together and since then I have highly respected Willem for his commitment and engagement for our sport and for the IJOC”.
