The figures on the ongoing outbreak of equine influenza in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland (QLD), as of 19 September were: 1386 infected premises; 342 suspect premises; 368 dangerous contact premises in NSW. The number of restricted areas is 23. In Queensland 198 infected premises were reported. At the moment, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing is used to identify presence of the virus and the use of this test seems promising.
Interestingly, the authorities have also decided to use vaccination in certain zones as a method of protection to halt further spreading of the disease. If a limited vaccination policy proves a successful approach, this may possibly aid in restoring core horse industry activities such as competition and breeding faster.
As a consequence of the epizooty, CCI 4* Adelaide, originally scheduled for 9 to 11 November 2007, has been cancelled and will now take place from 14 to 16 November 2008.
The regrettable change of date was decided upon by the Equestrian Federation of Australia. Many of the leading contenders for CCI 4* Adelaide have had their horses infected with the virus or are affected by movement restrictions; they will need time to get them back into peak condition. The best possible preparation of Australia’s equestrian contenders for the 2008 Olympic Games is given paramount importance.
