As the equestrian world gears up for another thrilling season, France enters the Longines League of Nations™ 2025 in second place with an impressive 13,503 points. Known for their rich equestrian history, the French nation combines their legacy with an exciting new addition to the series: a home stage in St. Tropez Gassin (FRA). This year promises to be a pivotal one for France, blending tradition, innovation, and preparation for future championships.
A Legacy of Excellence
France’s equestrian achievements are legendary, with the nation producing some of the world’s finest horses and athletes. Highlights include two Olympic team gold medals (Montreal 1976 and Rio de Janeiro 2016) and three FEI Jumping Wrld Championship titles (Dublin (IRL) 1982, Stockholm (SWE) 1990, and Jerez (ESP) 2002) — the most in history, tied with Germany. These accomplishments, paired with numerous individual medallists, cement France’s place as a dominant force in the sport.
Lessons from 2024: A Springboard for 2025
Reflecting on the Longines League of Nations™ 2024 season, Sophie Dubourg, the National Technical Director of the French Equestrian Federation shared key insights: “The sporting format of the circuit is truly exciting. For our French team, it was excellent preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The events demand seasoned and efficient combinations, but the challenge lies in the early start to the circuit, which overlaps with the FEI World Cup season. This year, we’re choosing to mix experience and youth from the outset.”
France’s 2024 campaign was highlighted by a spectacular victory in Rotterdam (NED), showcasing commanding double-clear performances. Looking ahead, the team’s expectations for 2025 are evident: “Our goal is to qualify for the Final with the best possible result. This year, we aim to strengthen new combinations following the Olympics and focus on training and experience-building, with an eye on the World Championships in 2026,” Dubourg explained. “The circuit’s format, with high stakes from the very first course, provides an educational and championship-like experience for our athletes.”
The Excitement of St. Tropez Gassin
A major highlight for 2025 is the introduction of St. Tropez Gassin as a new stage in the Longines League of Nations™ series. This inaugural event is particularly significant for France, marking the first time a competition of this calibre will be held in the south of the country. “Our territory is large, and this event allows us to reach a new audience,” Dubourg said. “We have full confidence in the organising team and sports director Philippe Rozier, an Olympic team champion in Rio 2016.”
The prospect of competing in front of a home crowd adds extra motivation for the French team. “We always strive to perform well at home and hope for a victory in Gassin.
“The support of our French public will undoubtedly energise us”
Sophie Dubourg (FFE, France)
Sustaining Peak Performance
Maintaining the health and vitality of both human and equine athletes is a cornerstone of France’s strategy. “Planning the competition season is essential,” Dubourg noted. “We collaborate closely with athletes, trainers, and veterinary staff to balance training, rest, and competition. The circuit’s predefined stages allow us to anticipate and prepare thoroughly, ensuring that horses and riders are in peak condition when it matters most.”
A Message to Fellow Nations and Fans
As the 2025 season approaches, Dubourg expressed excitement about the high level of competition. “All the nations are incredibly close in ability, making for a very competitive season. We hope France will shine once again!” she said. “We’re also thrilled to welcome equestrian fans and supporters to Gassin in September. It will be a memorable event for everyone involved.”
Looking Forward
With a blend of experience, youth, and strategic preparation, France is poised for a remarkable 2025 season in the Longines League of Nations™. The inclusion of St. Tropez Gassin as a home stage adds a new layer of excitement and opportunity, while the team’s focus on long-term goals ensures that each step is a building block toward future success.
As the countdown to the new season begins, one thing is certain: France promises to be a force to be reckoned with on the global stage.
