FEI Clean Sport seminar to spotlight equine and athlete welfare during Asia Horse Week

The FEI will host a Clean Sport seminar in Hong Kong during the second edition of the Asia Horse Week. The two-day seminar (14-15 February 2019) will provide a clear understanding of the equine and human anti-doping regulations and procedures.

“Increasing awareness and education is a major part of our work towards a doping-free environment in equestrian sport,” FEI President Ingmar De Vos said. “The Asia Horse Week brings together an impressive cross section of the equestrian community, making it the perfect opportunity to educate athletes and their support staff.”

Speakers at the seminar will include FEI Veterinary Director Göran Akerström and FEI Veterinary Advisor Caterina Termine, as well as and other industry experts. The plenary sessions will be open to all Asia Horse Week participants and technical discussions will be reserved for veterinarians.

The seminar will address the following subjects: FEI Clean Sport, limb sensitivity detection in Jumping and Endurance, biosecurity and international movement of horses, FEI Prohibited Substances List and current regulations, avoiding a positive sample, contamination and feed supplements.

Equestrian activity is currently experiencing a boom in the Asian region, with China an impressive example of this development. The country has the second largest horse population in the world, with 400,000 active equestrians, one in 1,000 fans riding regularly and 300,000 people directly employed in horse sport. International competitions are also growing fast in China, with a record 1,600% increase in the number of international events, going from just one in 2009 to 17 in 2017.

Asia Horse Week was conceived to promote the exchange of equine expertise, and raise the profile and standard of the industry in the region.

The initiative received strong backing in the region last year through its founding partner the Hong Kong Jockey Club and was held alongside the Longines Masters of Hong Kong.

“We are looking forward to building on the success of last year’s event, which saw nearly 200 equestrian experts attend,” said Christophe Ameeuw, CEO of EEM, founder and organiser of the Asia Horse Week. “It is an opportunity to raise the level of equestrian knowledge and expertise in the region and showcase what this region has to offer the sport.”

The Asia Horse Week will take place at the AsiaWorld Expo in Hong Kong.
