Welcome to the Kentucky Horse Park

We’re now 1,430 days away from the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2010 in Kentucky. This is the second in a series of stories being presented to introduce the world to Kentucky, southern hospitality, the Horse Capital of the World and the magnificent Kentucky Horse Park—the venue for 2010.

The Kentucky Horse Park is Kentucky’s largest state-owned tourist attraction, and is an agency of the Kentucky Commerce Cabinet. The park is dedicated to sharing Kentucky’s love of the horse with the world. Based in Lexington, the park this year will host some 900,000 visitors, 15,000 competition horses and 80 special events

The only park of its kind in the world, the Kentucky Horse Park is a working horse farm, educational theme park and equine competition facility dedicated to man’s relationship with the horse. Set on more than 1,200 acres in the heart of Kentucky’s famous Bluegrass Region, the park features as many as 53 different breeds of horse at work and at play. The park showcases the horse in daily equine presentations, horse drawn tours and carriage rides, horseback riding and pony rides, a movie presentation, and an exciting array of horse shows and special events throughout the year.

The park counts among its equine amenities numerous show rings, an indoor arena, polo fields, permanent and temporary stabling, cross-country course, steeplechase course and plans for an all-weather, climate-controlled, state-of-the-art arena which will begin construction in 2007. The equine competition facilities are some of the finest in the North America and host the annual Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. A 260-site resort campground also gives visitors a unique way to enjoy the Bluegrass countryside.

The Kentucky Horse Park is the home of the National Horse Center, a collection of 29 national, state and regional equine organizations that truly helps to fulfill the region’s status as the “Horse Capital of the World.”

The Kentucky Horse Park is located in the heart of the state just north of Lexington. Situated in prime horse farm country, the park is within easy driving distance to downtown Lexington, Keeneland and Red Mile racetracks, as well as Louisville to the west and Cincinnati to the north.

The Kentucky Horse Park opened to the public in September 1978 with the FEI World Eventing Championship, the only time that event has been held in the United States.

The Kentucky Horse Park was founded by a group of visionary Kentuckians, leaders from state government and the equine industry, who wanted to create a “people’s farm” for Kentuckians and visitors from around the world to come and learn more about the horse industry and the special Bluegrass culture that embodies this famous region.
