The FEI has recognised a need to encourage Young FEI Driving Athletes to progress in the sport. Over the past few years, the quality and skills of the Driving Youth has been increasing radically.
The FEI Driving European Championships for Youth only being held once every two year represents a big gap year for Young Athletes who can compete only for a few years in their respective age categories (Children: 12 to 14 years old, Juniors: 14 to 18 years old, and Under 25: 16 to 25 years old). It also is restricted to European Athletes, which does not promote the expansion of the Sport.
In order to keep Young Athletes, who represent the future of the sport, inspired and motivated, the FEI created the FEI Driving Youth Cup, to be held annually, and open to Athletes globally.
The aim is to have an easily organisable format, not too expensive nor time consuming for Organisers, Athletes and their Parents and all other stakeholders involved.
This project will also act as a roadmap for the future of the sport, as a new format of the discipline can be tested, and the accent on the Single Horse/Pony classes will be emphasised. The concept was presented in detail during the FEI Driving Forum in April 2023 and received a very enthusiastic and positive feedback.
The Board approved the creation of the FEI Driving Youth Cup during its 2023 Spring In Person Meeting. At least three test events will be organised in 2024 alongside standard FEI events. The series proper will begin in 2025.
