Longines FEI Endurance World Championships 2020 postponed to 2021
The FEI Board has approved the postponement of the Longines FEI Endurance World Championships 2020 in San Rossore, Pisa (ITA) to 22 May 2021, due to the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on equestrian sport.
The Board decision, which is an *Emergency Board Resolution under Article 20.3 of the FEI Statutes, was based on concerns over horse welfare and the impossibility of holding the Championships under “fair and equal conditions” for all National Federations on its original September 2020 date, and sporting/technical issues.
The FEI Executive Board and the Endurance Temporary Committee had both recommended postponement to 2021 and this was also agreed with the Pisa Organiser and the Italian National Federation. A survey among the 51 National Federations that actively compete in Endurance resulted in 33 positive answers out of 34 responses to questions about moving the Championships to May 2021 and their participation, where relevant, at either the FEI Pan American Endurance Championships or the FEI European Endurance Championships as well as the World Championships in the same year.
The Championships will be held under the FEI Endurance Rules approved by the General Assembly 2019, which come into force on 1 July 2020. It had been planned to give an exemption from the new Rules for the Championships if they had run on the original September 2020 date as the qualification period for Pisa ran from 7 September 2018 to 7 July 2020. However, as the Championships have now been postponed to next year, Qualification Rules for Championships as from 2021 will apply, as set out in Article 836 of the new Endurance Rules (11th Edition).
In a further *Emergency Board Resolution, the Board also agreed to prolong the qualification period. The exact details will be defined by the Endurance Temporary Committee and FEI Headquarters and communicated later.
Additionally, the undertakings agreed with the Organiser on 17 March 2020 will apply.
The FEI Policy for Enhanced Competition Safety during the Covid-19 Pandemic and the discipline-specific guidelines, in conjunction with the applicable guidance and policies from domestic government and health authorities, should allow for a safe return to competition from the beginning of July onwards. The extended qualification window, six-month freeze on qualifications expiry, and the 77 CEI 2* and 34 CEI 3* already entered in the FEI Calendar before the closing date for qualification, will all help maximise qualification opportunities and mitigate the effects of the pandemic on the sport.

In order to simplify National Federations procedure when entering Athletes for International Events and Championships, the Board authorised the FEI Headquarters, in consultation with the relevant Technical Committee, to deviate from the deadlines for entries as established by Article 116 of the FEI General Regulations upon request and on a case-by-case basis until 31 December 2020.
*Under the terms of Article 20.3 of the FEI Statutes, National Federations have until 22 July 2020 to declare their disapproval of any of the above Emergency Board Resolutions (marked *) by contacting the FEI Director Governance & Institutional Affairs.
Audit & Compliance
As the sole candidacy received for the position of Chair of the Audit & Compliance Committee is from a current member of the Committee, and this candidacy has been positively vetted by the Nominations Committee, the Board agreed to open an application process for one Member of the Audit & Compliance Committee. The timeline for this process is to be defined by the FEI Headquarters and will be communicated to National Federations.
