Second International Symposium 

The second international symposium of the Aachen School of Course Design (ASCD) under the patronage of the FEI will take place on 1 September during the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games in Aachen.

The topics of discussion will be landscape architecture, layout and design of natural showgrounds, natural fixed and solid fences and footing.

Christoph Städler and Dirk Decker, golf course architects, will make a presentation on “Landscaping and Golf Course Architecture – Inspiration for Equestrian Showgrounds?”

Canadian architect Robert Jolicoeur will speak about the design and layout of natural showgrounds featuring natural fixed and/or solid fences, the recognition and the image of tournaments.

The French engineer Francis Clément will answer questions about modern sand footing, its technology, water management, maintenance and costs. All weather grass footing will be discussed.

Dutch engineers Kees Haaksman and Ton Agterberg will present the use and maintenance of lava in footing for show jumping, similarly to the stadium in Aachen.

Olympic course designer Olaf Petersen’s topic will be about the importance of design, colours and beauty of obstacles; examples will be shown. Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios will compare grass and sand footings at great international tournaments. FEI 1st Vice President Sven Holmberg will conclude with a presentation on ethics, fair play, welfare of the horse and the FEI Code of Conduct.
