Chairman Notes

Dear Friends,
Quite a bit of news this time! The first is that Jamaica has agreed to host our Group IV Meeting, Nov 4 & 5 at their lovely Half Moon Hotel. The room rate will be $240 per night, double occupancy. Please let me know if you plan to attend so that I can advise Anthony Pasmore as to how many rooms he will need set aside. You need to tell me 1) whether you are coming, 2) how many in your party and who they are, 3) how long you plan to stay and whether you need a hotel room reserved. We will manage the finer details as we go along.

The US Virgin Islands have offered to host our 2005 Fall Group Meeting. Isnt that great?!

Barbados will be organizing the FEI/OS Coaches Course, December 9 - 14. Two persons may attend from each of the Group IV NFs in good standing with the FEI, excepting Canada and the USA. These NFs include Antigua, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and the US Virgin Islands. The Invitation and application will be issued by the Barbados Federation as soon as some final details have been worked out. Mark your calendars now! Jenni Wilson (bea@sunbeach.net) is the contact for the course.

I am hoping to visit all the NFs in Group IV over the next few years. This year (2004) I plan to visit Jamaica for the Group meeting, Bermuda for their PSI/FEI Challenge Competition November 19 21 and Barbados for the Coaches Course. Please let me know if you have events or occasions which you would like me to attend in 2005 and I will try to work out a schedule.

Barbados News
.From Jenni Wilson:
FEI World Dressage Challenge Final 2003, Hagen, Germany.
Miss Akoele Roachford represented Group X at the 2003 Finals raised the Barbados Flag high in Germany - a first for Barbados in itself. Akoele represented our region admirably placing 1st in the first qualifier and 2nd in the second qualifier gaining enough points to compete in the Final competition. Riding 3 different horses with hardly any time to get to know the "right buttons to push", Akoele finished second overall. We are extremely proud of her and she gained invaluable insight and experience during her entire time at the Finals. This is the second time the Caribbean region has achieved 2nd place. Roberta Foster (BAR) rode to second place in 2002. Our thanks to FEI and PSI for enabling such an event to take place

Following the FEI WDC held in 2004 we are proud to report that we have qualified with 2 finalists for the Final being held in 2005, Miss Akoele Roachford as the adult Dressage competitor and Miss Rose Gemmell for the Childrens Dressage competitor.

FEI World Jumping Challenge
Barbados was finally able to hold its Jumping Challenge on May 7th & 9th after a few rain delays. This year showed the return of Barbados to the Challenge having been unable to compete for a number of years. Our riders performed creditably under wet skies and we saw a number of clear rounds. Placing first was Miss Adriana King our youngest competitor at 14 years of age riding Jeblars Hero and second was Mrs. Stacey Humphrey riding Amazing Grace.

CEA Dressage and Junior Jumping Competitions
We look forward to the Barbados leg of the CEA Dressage being held later in the year and to welcoming Lisette Purcell back to our shores. The CEA has always been an important date in our Equestrian Calendar and this year we hope to have an enjoyable and competitive competition - good luck to all the islands participating. Our Junior Jumpers have enjoyed a competitive competition to date and have completed 2 of their 3 legs of competition. Our team will be travelling to Trinidad in September to complete the competition and we are looking forward to favourable results!

Olympic Youth Camp
The Barbados Olympic Association is sending 2 athletes to attend the Athens Olympic Youth Camp taking place in Greece during the period August 11th to 26th 2004 and we are proud that one of the youths selected from all the sporting Associations is Miss Shari Haynes a member of the Barbados Equestrian Association. This is an enviable opportunity for Shari who will get to participate in all the pomp and pageantry of the Olympic Games - there are many of us who wish we were a little younger!

Olympic Solidarity/FEI Coaches Course
Barbados will be hosting the OS Course on December 9th - 14th with Suzanne Macken being the FEI Tutor. We look forward to welcoming a maximum of 16 candidates from Antigua, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and US Virgin Islands to our shores. Planning is well under way and the relevant Islands will be receiving their invites and application forms shortly. Here's to an enjoyable and educational Coaches Course!

Cayman Islands News
Mary McTaggart wrote:

We have just completed our first ever jumping training course with the FEI trainer Jorge Verswyel which ran from July 30th to Aug 3rd.

It was a great experience and we feel that the riders and horses have benefited greatly from his training technique. He was able to teach our riders and horses how to approach and jump the obstacles in a calm and collected manner, and we ended up with many riders jumping a course of 1m and above. All riders left his lessons encouraged and ended up feeling more confident and in better control. Jorge was also able to help us in many other ways with advice on equipment and our future. He had many positive things to say about our riders and horses and we look forward to his return.

Riders from Cayman are scheduled to visit Trinidad for the CEA competition on the 25th and 26th September. and then Jamaica for the final section in early November.

We are participating in the CEA dressage competition this year in October.

USA News
Reported by Sherry Frank with a note by Kate Jackson

North American Young Riders Championship
The 2004 Maui Jim North American Young Riders Championship was host to riders from all across the United States and Canada. Mexico returned to the Championship after an absence of several years and we welcomed riders from the Dominican Republic and Venezuela as well. Maui Jim Sunglasses joined the program as the title sponsor this year and all the riders were very excited to find a certificate for a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses among the many gifts they received.

Each year USEF presents the Captain Andrew B de Szinay Memorial Sportsmanship Trophy to the young rider who best personifies the high standards and virtues of integrity, sportsmanship, honor, courage, team spirit, good temper and unselfishness. The winner is determined from essays submitted by the participating teams. This year the Sportsmanship Trophy went to Megan Greg of Grand Junction, CO who traveled all the way to Illinois from her coach's facility in Heber City, Utah by herself and with no team to support her. She displayed the positive attitude, great heart and smiling disposition no matter the circumstances throughout the competition, which exemplifies true courage and sportsmanship.

A new perpetual trophy was established and provided by the staff of the NAYRC. This new trophy, named the Howard B. Simpson High Five Trophy will be presented to the individual determined to be the most outstanding volunteer at the NAYRC each year. The first recipient was Howard Simpson, as the consummate volunteer, in honor and recognition of his long standing dedication to and support of the North American Young Rider program and Championship for twenty years.

Note: It was great to see Paul and Monica Pereech from Bermuda at the NAYRC. Paul was judging Show Jumping and helped me (Kate) award the FEI medals to the winning riders. It was a wonderful event in many ways. We are all so grateful to Howard for all the years he has hosted this event and provided great sport for the Young riders in this hemisphere.
