Meredith leads the German charge at Stuttgart

It was a German whitewash at the fourth leg of the FEI World Cup™ Jumping series in Stuttgart this afternoon as the home riders had it all their own way when Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum clinched victory ahead of rising star Daniel Deusser in second and Oslo-winner Rene Tebbel in third.

"Big, definitely big, and very technical" was Michaels-Beerbaum's description of American course-designer Carl Holmfeld's 13-fence track which certainly tested the early runners in the opening round of the competition. Faults were particularly prevalent towards the end of the course with the four-stride distance from the big, wide oxer at fence 10 to the following double creating plenty of problems, while the penultimate oxer off a right-hand turn and the final 1.60m stile also created a stiff challenge. "The fences were very airy - there were just three white poles at the front of the second-last - and your horse needed to be really careful but it was a super track" Meredith insisted.

There were 11 into the jump-off, but only three of the first 20 managed to leave all the fences up in the first round as it took some time for riders to work it all out. Seventh into the ring it was Germany's Alois Pollmann-Schweckhorst who first found the key with Candy but another six crossed the line before Daniel Deusser followed suit. Then Switzerland's Markus Fuchs and Nirmette also got it right and a further eight more eventually found their way into the second-round decider.

Pollman-Schweckhorst led the way against the clock but this time his game little 14 year old mare collected eight faults. Deusser, however, made no mistake. The 25 year old German, who recently began working for Jan Tops in Holland, has been making an increasing impression on the international circuit in recent times. Riding Upsilon d'Ocquier he won the Grand Prix at Oslo and was second in the Grand Prix at Helsinki last month and the nine year old Belgian-bred horse set the target today when galloping home for a double-clear in 44.92 seconds. Markus Fuchs was almost two seconds off the pace when picking up four faults but Norway's Tony Andre Hansen sprung another surprise when bringing Camiro home with just two time-faults on the board. A pupil of former Irish army rider Lt Col Gerry Mullins, Hansen combines show jumping with his career as a pop star but takes his riding very seriously and has been on a definite upward learning curve over the last year having established an excellent partnership with the talented nine year old horse.

Denmark's Linnea Ericsson collected seven faults with Jolly Royal C while Malin Baryard-Johnsson and Butterfly Flip hit just one for four faults. However the Swedish rider was far from disappointed with her visit to Stuttgart having won the hotly-contested Mercedes German Masters on Friday in which her fellow-countryman Rolf-Goran Bengtsson lined up in second place. Next to go today was Holland's Albert Zoer who slotted in behind Deusser when bringing Okidoki home in 45.43 seconds but Meredith and Shutterfly blew all that away when scorching in more than a second ahead of her young German counterpart. It wasn't quite over yet however.

Belgium's Judy-Ann Melchior and Grande Dame Z picked up a single time penalty on a careful tour of the track but, second-last to go, Christian Ahlmann threw down a real challenge to Meredith's effort when breaking the beam more than a half-second sooner but, unfortunately, at the expense of a single fence and when first-round winner Rene Tebbel stopped the clock on 45.36 seconds with Team Harmony Coupe de Coeur it was all over.

"I saw Daniel's round and he was really strong" said Meredith after collecting her first prize of a brand new Mercedes car worth €65,000. "Daniel has been in good form over the last few weeks but I just went into the ring knowing that I should go as fast as possible without overdoing it and it turned out great" the 36 year old American-born German rider pointed out. She is very happy with Shutterfly's form. "He had two months off after the World Games and he has come back feeling really good - we were second in the Grand Prix in Lyon and third in the World Cup in Verona - now I'm planning to go to the Riders Tour at Munich and to the next leg of the World Cup in Geneva and then we will see after that" added the rider who took the FEI World Cup™ jumping title in 2005 and was runner-up in 2004.

Today's result promotes her from eleventh position up to fourth on the FEI World Cup™ Western European League leaderboard behind Britain's Michael Whitaker in third while Rene Tebble's third placing today moves him into second spot behind Dutchman Gerco Schroder who returns to the head of the table. Schroder had to settle for twelfth place this afternoon having collected a single first-round time fault with Eurocommerce Monaco, but that was still good enough to add another five points to his tally which was greatly boosted by his victory in Verona last Sunday.

Meanwhile as the world's top riders were packing up after their weekend in Stuttgart, news was coming through of the passing of legendary American show jumping horse Gem Twist who was named Best Horse of the Stockholm World Equestrian Games in 1994 and who died today aged 27.

FEI World Cup™Jumping has entered its 29th season. The series, created in 1978, today comprises 14 leagues on all continents. The best riders from 132 preliminary competitions will qualify for the final in Las Vegas, USA which takes place from 19 to 22 April 2007. The title-holder is Germany's Marcus Ehning.

The Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI), founded in 1921, is the international body governing equestrian sport recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and includes 133 National Federations.

Equestrian sport has been on the Olympic programme since 1912 with three disciplines - Jumping, Dressage and Eventing. It is one of the very few sports in which men and women compete on equal terms. It is also the only sport which involves two athletes - horse and rider. The FEI has relentlessly concerned itself with the welfare of the horse, which is paramount and must never be subordinated to competitive or commercial influences
