Case Study - Sardinia

Here is the challenge! is a therapeutic riding project aimed at multiple sclerosis sufferers in Sardinia, where there is a high incidence of the disease.

From 2012 to 2014, the project, which was set up by the Sardinian regional committee of the Italian Equestrian Federation, will benefit from FEI Solidarity funding.

The project is aimed at Sardinian riders aged 20 to 35 with no previous riding experience. In addition to providing riding therapy, one of its objectives is to show that good sports results can be achieved. To this end, after six months of therapeutic riding, the participants’ activities will become more sport-orientated.

Three trainers , two judges and one vet are involved in the project and are attending workshops to improve their knowledge of Para-Equestrian Dressage for people suffering from multiple sclerosis. In the second year of the project, the riders’ athletic preparation will be further increased. A Sardinian-hosted CPED1* will be attended and the project organisers hope that one or more of their riders will be able to take part and obtain a score of about 60 per cent. The same venue will host a conference, where the project and its results will be presented. and the project will finish with a congress and a competition.
