After a three-year break, the long-awaited FEI Vaulting World Cup™ Final returned in April 2022 at the Partner Pferd in the Leipziger Messe (GER). And it turned out to be a truly emotional Final. World champions in the Pas de Deux at the time, Janika Derks and Johannes Kay (GER) added another gold medal to their trophy case and bid a tearful farewell to the sport as they headed to retirement.
In Female competition, Manon Moutinho took over the crown from Derks, the defending 2019 champion. This was the first time ever that a French athlete took the title in this category. Derks placed second overall, with scores from Friday’s technical test and Saturday’s free test combined, and Kimberly Palmer took home the bronze for the USA.
Lorenzo Lupacchini of Italy took the top honours in the Male division, beating French Vaulting superstar Lambert Leclezio, who led the field on the first day. Leclezio had to settle for the silver, and third place was awarded to Germany’s Jannik Heiland, the world number one heading into the Finals.

Manon Moutinho repeated her record-breaking performance at the ECCO FEI World Championships, held at Herning, Denmark in August. It was another Female gold for the French athlete – again, the first for her country – aboard Saitiri, lunged by Corinne Bosshard. Germany’s Julia Sophie Wagner won the silver medal and the home crowd were thrilled to see Danish Vaulter Sheena Bendixen win bronze.
“I’m really happy for my country, it’s good to show that French girls can do it too.”

Frenchman Lambert Leclezio dominated in the Male competition, making it a 1-2 win for France in the Individual competition. It almost looked as if France would sweep the entire podium for France, with Quentin Jabet earning second place but ultimately, Jannik Heiland took the bronze for Germany.
In the Squad category, the team for Germany called Norka des VV Koeln-Duenwald, finished on top in a tightly contested battle with France, who ultimately won the silver medal, while bronze went to Switzerland.
In the Nations Team competition, the newly formed French team, inspired by Manon Moutinho’s individual performance, carried off the gold medal. Once more the Danish fans were treated to home athletes on the podium, with their team picking up the silver and team Austria won the bronze medal.
This championship was also the occasion for Vaulting fans and fellow athletes to bid farewell to Lambert Leclezio, who retired after the event. He left many wonderful performances etched in the minds of all who watched him, and it will be a challenge to find another Vaulter who is ready to bring Leclezio’s artistry and maturity to the discipline.
