FEI Policy for Enhanced Competition Safety during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Sadly the Covid-19 pandemic led to the second consecutive cancellation of the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final that was due to be held in Gothenburg (SWE) at the end of March. However, FEI Events picked up slowly in the months that followed with safety measures put in place by the FEI together with respective local governments around the world.

A key element in the successful hosting of events under safe conditions was the FEI Policy for Enhanced Competition Safety during the Covid-19 Pandemic, which was implemented in 2020 with regular updates as the pandemic situation evolved. In 2021, mask-wearing was still strongly recommended for FEI Events and Organising Committees were still required to conduct a risk assessment before deciding on their Covid-19 plan in compliance with the locally applicable laws and policies.

Covid-19 safety measures at the Olympic & Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020

Between staff, officials and volunteers, the FEI was responsible for over 350 participants at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. In order to ensure maximum safety for everyone onsite, the Tokyo Organising Committee had put in place stringent safety measures. All persons needed to undergo Covid-19 pre-departure testing, daily Covid-testing onsite and were subject to extreme activity restrictions, limiting movement to just the hotel and the competition venue.

The overall compliance with the Covid-19 countermeasures was excellent and resulting in only three close contact notifications and one positive case without symptoms.
