Covid-19, EHV-1 and IT adaptability

In 2021, there were approximately 40’000 support requests for the FEI IT Support team representing a 65% increase from 2020.

Throughout the year the impact of Covid-19 on international equestrian events, heavily impacted the workload of the FEI’s IT Department. In addition, the unexpected EHV-1 outbreak experienced in mainland Europe at the beginning of the year, contributing to a substantial increase in the workload of the FEI IT Department.

EHV-1 together with the Return to Competition Measures, as well as subsequent By-Laws, made development of the FEI HorseApp a top priority, in order to ensure that athletes and horses could return to competitions as safely and rapidly as possible. Additionally, the uncertainty brought about by Covid-19 and EHV-1 resulted in larger number of changes to the FEI Calendar due to late additions and modifications to existing events all through the year.

FEI HorseApp

The FEI HorseApp aims to gather maximum information about the health status of horses to ensure that biosecurity measures at Events are respected and that horses are safe.

The following new modules were developed and added to the HorseApp over the course of 2021:

  • Examination upon Arrival
  • Upload of EHV-1 PCR test results
  • Self-check-in option
  • Organising Committee Check-out module
  • Full management of Horse Health Requirements
  • Temperature checks
  • A sanction system

The FEI is also integrating other features into the HorseApp to be fully compliant with the European Commission Animal Health Law which came into force in 2021.

FEI Online Schedule platform

The FEI Online Schedule platform was launched at the beginning of 2021 with a pilot phase covering a selection of FEI Eventing Events that took place between March and May 2021. Since 1 June 2021 the FEI Online Schedule is successfully being used for all FEI Eventing Events.

Improvements to the FEI Website and FEI Database

In 2021, a dedicated page for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic & Paralympic Games was integrated into the FEI website, which provided information and live results throughout both Events.  This was followed by a specially designed shared platform to manage the websites of all FEI World Championships including the FEI Jumping, Dressage, Para Dressage and Vaulting World Championships in Herning 2022 and the FEI Eventing and Driving World Championships in Pratoni de Vivaro 2022.

The FEI website also now displays live results for FEI Dressage Events judged with a Paperless Judging Solution, including start lists, real time scores and final results.

Throughout the year, the IT Department finalised several tools in the FEI Database, among them one for the implementation of the Endurance Rules which is designed to monitor the rotation of Officials.

Tools for handling the ongoing follow-up and changes brought about by Covid-19 have also been created as several Board Resolutions – for example, the unfreezing of the World Ranking in each discipline which was put in place in 2020 – were set back to their pre-Covid-19 status.
