Sport Specific Information | |
---|---|
When and where did you begin this sport? | He first rode horses as a child at his grandfather's farm in Sussex County, NJ, United States of America. He began riding competitively at age 13. "Through my experiences eventing in Pony Club, I took a great liking to showjumping and took a position as a working student for George Morris, Chris Kappler, and Jeff Cook at Hunterdon [Equestrian Center in New Jersey]. During my time working at Hunterdon, I gained a strong understanding of the showjumping industry." |
Why this sport? | He developed a passion for equestrian growing up on his grandfather's farm. ''I had a barn in my backyard. My parents purchased the farm as a business venture, so the barn could help pay the mortgage. Although they had no interest in riding, my grandfather had horses and really loved them so it was kind of fate that I should end up riding.'' |

Sporting philosophy / motto | "Your horse is your best teacher. Sometimes the most difficult horses have the most to give back to you, and giving up should never be an option. Read your horse's signs and signals, and by doing so, you can earn his trust and build a relationship that will bring you closer to your goals. You won't always have your dream horse, but it is important to ride as much as you can, no matter the quality or ability of your mount. Every horse teaches you something, and passing up an opportunity to ride and listen to your horse might be passing up learning something that could help you move forward in your career." Other information | TIME IN EUROPE He went to Europe at age 20 to work for horse dealer Alan Waldman. He hoped to become one of Waldman's riders, but he found himself used more as a groom and returned home after just a year. "Over there, if they don't think you are good enough, they just start taking rides away. I found myself driving horses to shows and grooming instead of having a group of horses to ride. It was so hard when I gave my notice that I was leaving. They asked me to stay on as manager because I was so organised and offered me a few horses for me to ride. I thanked them, said I wanted to ride, and went home."
