When and where did you begin this sport? He began riding at age 13.
Why this sport? He grew up around horses but he was more interested in football as a child. However, he did not like school so he chose to focus on riding. "Once I realised that I was really good, I wanted more and more. I wanted to be better. In football you could only get points and my sister came home from riding with cups and trophies."

(Facebook team page, 21 Dec 2022; jurvrieling.nl, 21 Aug 2020) RIO DISAPPOINTMENT He was disqualified from the individual competition at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after veterinarians found blood on his horse Zirocco Blue's flank. Vrieling had used his whip after the horse stopped twice at a combination during the qualification round. "I did not disagree [with the disqualification]. After he stopped, I hit him in reaction.
